The AGILE mini-calorimeter (MCAL) detected a short hard burst at T0 = 2020-01-28 12:23:29.98 +/- 0.01 s (UTC).

The event triggered the 64 ms MCAL logic timescale and lasted about 0.10 s, releasing a total number of ~90 counts in the detector (in the 0.4-100 MeV energy range), above an average background rate of ~500 counts / s.

The AGILE-MCAL detector is a CsI detector with a 4 pi FoV, sensitive in the energy range 0.4-100 MeV. Additional analysis of AGILE data is in progress.

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detected the short GRB 191031D at T0 = 2019-10-31 21:23:28.17 +/- 0.01 s (UTC), already detected by Fermi/GBM (GCN #26111), Swift (D'Elia et al., 2019; GCN #26112), and INTEGRAL/SPIACS (trignum=8402).

The event lasted about 0.2 s and released a total number of ~430 counts in the detector (in the 0.4-100 MeV energy range), above an average background rate of 544 counts / s.

The AGILE-MCAL detector is a CsI detector with a 4 pi FoV, sensitive in the energy range 0.4-100 MeV. Additional analysis of AGILE data is in progress.

AGILE detected a long burst at T0 = 2019-09-28 13:13:48.39 +/- 0.01 s (UTC). The event is visible in the scientific ratemeters (RMs) of the Super-AGILE (SA; 18-60 keV), Anti-Coincidence (AC; 50-200 keV), and Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL; 0.4-100 MeV) detectors. Their light curves show a multi-peaked profile, lasting ~20 s and releasing ~2,200 counts in the SA RMs, lasting ~30 s and releasing ~160,000 counts in the AC RMs, and lasting ~20 s and releasing ~73,200 counts in the MCAL RMs. The ratemeters light curves can be found at http://www.agilescienceapp.it/notices/GRB_064516_496761236.785171_RM.png.

The event also triggered two Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL) data acquisitions (in the 0.4-100 MeV energy range). Additional analysis of the AGILE data is in progress.

We refined the position of the long GRB 190501A detected by the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) of AGILE (Lucarelli et al., GCN #24361) and previously reported by Ursi et al., GCN #24360.

A preliminary maximum likelihood analysis integrating from T0 to T0+500 s yields a detection at 7 sigma with an average flux of F(E> 30 MeV)=(50+/-15)e-05 ph/cm^2/s, with the positional error box centered at R.A., Dec. (J2000) = 172.8, 64.1 deg with a mean radius of 0.8 deg (95% stat. c.l.) [ Galactic coordinates (l,b)=(136.6, 50.8) deg ].

This is among the most intense gamma-ray flux ever detected by AGILE from a GRB.

These measurements were obtained with AGILE observing a large portion of the sky in spinning mode. Additional analysis of AGILE data is in progress.

The Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) of AGILE detected a gamma-ray transient temporally coincident with the long bright GRB 190501A reported by Ursi et al., GCN #24360. Given the rarity of this transient, we consider it the gamma-ray counterpart of GRB 190501A.

A preliminary GRID analysis in the energy range 30 MeV - 1 GeV shows a detection with a statistical significance of about 18 sigma, at the sky position R.A., Decl. (J2000): 174,+65 +/- 5 deg (Galactic coordinates l,b: 135,+50 deg), over a time integration of 20 s starting from the T0 of GRB 190501A.

The preliminary estimated position is below the GRID 30 deg off-axis angle.

These measurements were obtained with AGILE observing a large portion of the sky in spinning mode. Additional analysis of AGILE data is in progress.

AGILE detected a long burst at T0 = 2019-05-01 05:23:23.58 +/- 0.01 s (UTC).

The event is visible in the scientific ratemeters (RMs) of the Super-AGILE (SA, 18-60 keV), Anti-Coincidence (AC, 50-200 keV), and Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL, 0.4-100 MeV) detectors. Their light curves show a multi-peaked FRED profile, lasting ~24 s and releasing ~11200 counts in the SA RMs, lasting ~15 s and releasing ~2000 counts in the AC RMs, and lasting ~18 s and releasing ~20200 counts in the MCAL RMs. The ratemeters light curves can be found at http://www.agilescienceapp.it/notices/GRB_062362_483773003.584545_RM.png.

The event also triggered a Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL) data acquisition lasting ~8.6 s and releasing a total number of ~10140 counts in the detector (in the 0.4-100 MeV energy range). The MCAL light curve can be found at: http://www.agilescienceapp.it/notices/GRB_062362_483773003.584545.png.

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detected a burst at T0 = 2019-03-05 13:05:19.34 +/- 0.01 s (UTC).

The event lasted about 1.8 s and released a total number of ~8040 counts in the detector (in the 0.4-100 MeV energy range), above an average background rate of 620 counts / s. The burst is also clearly visible in the scientific ratemeters of the Anti-Coincidence (AC, 50-200 keV), SuperAGILE (SA, 18-60 keV) and MiniCALorimeter (MCAL, 0.4-100 MeV) detectors.

The AGILE-MCAL detector has a full solid angle acceptance, and is operational in the range 0.4 - 100 MeV.

AGILE detected the long GRB 190202A first reported by Swift in Lien et al., GCN 23830, in the scientific ratemeters of the Anti-Coincidence (50-200 keV), Super-AGILE (SA; 18-60 keV) and Mini-Caloremeter (MCAL; 0.4-100 MeV) detectors.

The event position was not exposed by the AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector.

The low significance event lasted about 15s in the three light curves with the SA one starting about 8 s before the trigger time and the MCAL one about 10 s before..

In the 0.4-100 MeV energy range, the event lasted about 0.6 s and released a total number of ~530 counts in the detector, above an average background rate of 540 counts / s.

The GRB is clearly detected also by the AGILE scientific ratemeters: in particular, by the Super-AGILE (20-60 keV), Anti-Coincidence (50-200 keV), and MCAL (0.4-100 MeV) ratemeters.

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detected the GRB 190114C at T0 = 2019-01-14 20:57:02.26 +/- 0.01 s (UTC), which was also detected by Swift/BAT-XRT (Gropp et al., GCN #23688), MASTER (Tyurina et al., GCN #23690), Pan-STARRS (de Ugarte Postigo et al., GCN #23692), NOT (Selsing et al., GCN #23695), OASDG (Izzo et al., GCN #23699), GROND (Bolmer et al., GCN #23702), Fermi/GBM (Hamburg et al., GCN #23707), Fermi/LAT (Kocevski et al., GCN #23709), X-shooter (Kann et al., GCN #23710), and representing the first GRB ever detected by ground-based Cherenkov telescopes (MAGIC, Mirzoyan et al., GCN #23701).

In the 0.4-100 MeV energy band, the event lasted T90=6.2 s and released a total number of ~32600 counts in the detector, above an average background rate of about 700 Hz. The light curve shows several peaks, which can be grouped in three episodes, characterized by different energy profiles: the first and third episodes are mostly constituted of counts with energies < 1.4 MeV, whereas the second central episode exhibits a substantial fraction of high-energy counts with energies > 1.4 MeV. The time-integrated spectrum of the first episode (from T0 to T0+2.5 s) can be fitted in the energy range [0.4-2 MeV] with a simple power law with ph.ind.=2.55 -0.07/+0.08, resulting in a reduced chi-square of 1.56 (21 d.o.f.). The burst fluence in the same energy range and time interval is 2.11e-05 erg/cm^2 (90% confidence level).

The time-integrated spectrum of the second episode (from T0+2.5 s to T0+4.8 s) can be fitted in the energy range [0.4-60 MeV] with a broken power law with alpha=1.46 -0.35/+0.41, beta=2.53 -0.05/+0.07, and a break energy of 750 +56/-110 keV, resulting in a reduced chi-square of 1.44 (46 d.o.f.). This episode is possibly made by several spectral components. The burst fluence in the same energy range and time interval is 1.31e-4 erg/cm^2 (90% confidence level).

The time-integrated spectrum of the third episode (from T0+4.8 s to T0+6.2 s) can be fitted in the energy range [0.4-2 MeV] with a simple power law with ph.ind.=2.95 -0.09/+0.10, resulting in a reduced chi-square of 1.11 (21 d.o.f.). The burst fluence in the same energy range and time interval is 1.11e-05 erg/cm^2 (90% confidence level).

The GRB is clearly detected also by the AGILE scientific ratemeters: in particular, by the Super-AGILE (20-60 keV), Anti-Coincidence (50-200 keV), and MCAL (0.4-100 MeV) ratemeters.

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detected a short burst at T0 = 2018-11-21 20:43:36.283 +/- 0.01 s (UTC).

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detector high time resolution data acquisition was triggered twice by the GRB on sub-millisecond and 16 ms timescales.

The light curve shows a sharp peak lasting about 0.16 s, that released a total number of ~334 counts in the detector (in the 0.4-100 MeV energy range), above an average background rate of 573 counts / s. Two weaker pulses are present at T0+0.32 s and T0+0.67 s.

The GRB is clearly detected also by AGILE scientific ratemeters; in particular, by the Super-AGILE (20-60 keV), **Anti-Coincidence (50-200 keV), and MCAL (0.4-100 MeV) ratemeters.

Further analysis is still in progress.The AGILE-MCAL detector has a full solid angle acceptance, and is operational in the range 0.4 - 100 MeV.

We present a refined analysis of the long GRB 180914B detected by AGILE/MCAL (Ursi et al., GCN #23226), AGILE/GRID (Verrecchia et al., GCN #23231), Fermi/LAT (Bissaldi et al., GCN #23232), and Konus-Wind (Frederiks et al., GCN #23240), whose afterglow has been so far detected by Swift/XRT (D'Ai et al., GCN #23236) and Swift/UVOT (Kuin et al., GCN #23241), KAIT (Zheng & Filippenko, GCN #23237), RATIR (Troja et al., GCN #23238), and OAJ (de Ugarte Postigo et al., GCN #23239).

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detector high time resolution data acquisition was triggered twice by the GRB on sub-millisecond and 16 ms timescales.

A first GRB peak triggered complete MCAL data acquisition, starting at T1 = 2018-09-14 18:23:02.22 +/- 0.01 s (UTC) and ending at about T1+6.4 s, and lasted the whole duration of the acquisition. The time-integrated spectrum measured between T1 and T1+6.4 s can be fitted in the energy range 0.5-40 MeV with a power law with photon index 1.74 0.13/+0.06 and a cut-off energy of 2.35 -2.2/+1.54 MeV, with a reduced chi-square of 1.13 (66 d.o.f.). The burst fluence in the same energy range and time interval is 2.4e-04 erg/cm^2 (90% confidence level).

After ~85 s, a second GRB peak triggered complete MCAL data acquisition, starting at T2 = 2018-09-14 18:24:27.84 +/- 0.01 s and ending at about T2+6.4, and lasted about 2.7 s. The time-integrated spectrum measured between T2 and T2+2.7 s can be fitted in the 0.5-40 MeV energy range with a simple power law with ph.ind. = 2.13 -0.07/+0.08 and a reduced chi-square of 1.23 (68 d.o.f.). The corresponding fluence is 1.94e-05 erg/cm^2 (90% confidence level).

The AGILE-MCAL detector has a full solid angle acceptance, and is operational in the range 0.4 - 100 MeV. This observation was done with the MCAL trigger capability set to a reduced mode with substantial TM constraints, and the Super-AGILE imaging being turned-off. A substantially enhanced AGILE instrument configuration is foreseen to be implemented shortly.

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detected at T0 = 2018-01-11 16:42:06.0 +/- 0.02 UTC the long GRB 180111A reported by Swift (Lien et al., GCN 22318), in the acquired data interval (following an internal trigger) started at T1=16:42:05.50 UTC and ended at 16:42:12.40 UTC. The MCAL light curve shows three main peaks starting at T0-0.15 s till ~6 s, with the main part within T0-0.10 s and T0+5.40 s. The main GRB interval released a total number of ~5537 counts at E>400 keV in the detector, above an average background rate of 18 counts/32ms.

The AGILE-MCAL detector has a full solid angle acceptance, and is operational in the range 0.4 - 100 MeV.

The AGILE Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL) detected a long burst at T0 = 2017-12-27 00:00:30.00 +/- 0.01 UTC in the acquired data interval (following an internal trigger) started at T1=00:00:29.00 UTC and ended at 00:00:46.50 UTC. The MCAL light curve shows a multi-peaked structure, with the main part within T0+0.70 s and T0+5.50 s and a second short peak at T0+10.50 s. The main GRB interval released a total number of ~28190 counts at E>400 keV in the detector, above an average background rate of 23 counts/32ms.

We performed an analysis of AGILE data of the GRB 170127C (Fermi/GBM trigger num 507173752; GCN #20543), which occurred at 2017-01-27 01:35:47.79 UTC.

The Mini-CALorimeter (MCAL), sensitive in the energy range from 400 keV to 100 MeV, detected a short burst at T0 = 2017-01-27 01:35:47.9294 UTC, that triggered both the on-board 16 ms and 64 ms timescale hardware logic system. The MCAL light curve shows a sharp single peak, that lasted about 0.13 s and released a total number of ~980 counts above 400 keV in the detector, above an average background rate of 590 counts/s.

The time-integrated spectrum measured between T0 and T0+0.13 s can be fit in the energy range 0.5 - 20 MeV with a power law with high-energy cut-off at 1.63 MeV, with photon index -1.64±0.19 and reduced chi-squared 1.08 (18 d.o.f.). As observed by MCAL, the burst fluence in the same energy range and time interval is 1.20±0.01e-6 erg cm-2. All quoted errors are at 90% confidence levels.

SuperAGILE, sensitive in the energy range 18 to 60 keV, also clearly detected the burst with its ratemeters.

 

TITLE: GCN CIRCULAR NUMBER: 20525

SuperAGILE localised the long-duration GRB 170115B (Hamburg et al., GCN 20463; McEnery et al., GCN 20464; Sharma et al., GCN 20466; Xiao et al., GCN 20469; Verrecchia et al., GCN 20474; Frederiks et al., GCN 20476, Shimizu et al., GCN 20483) on 15 January 2017, at 17:49:14 UT.

The event had a duration of about 50.0 s in the 18-60 keV energy range, with a multi-peaked structure. The burst position was reconstructed as:

RA(J2000): 189.011 deg (12h 36m 02.64s)

DEC(J2000): -46.796 deg (-46d 47' 45.58")

with an uncertainty of 5' (radius). The uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

The SuperAGILE error box is completely contained in the FERMI-LAT error box (McEnery et al., GCN 20464) and partially intersects the IPN annulus (Hurley et al., GCN 20475). The Swift-XRT afterglow candidate (D'Avanzo et al., GNC 20477) is also contained in the SuperAGILE error box.

Due to telemetry downlink restrictions, the SuperAGILE experiment has been kept on but with no telemetry download since late 2012. The full telemetry link for the AGILE mission has now been restored and the data of SuperAGILE are again routinely downloaded.

AGILE detected the long GRB 170115B, reported by Fermi-GBM (Hamburg et al. GCN #20463) and Fermi-LAT (McEnery et al. GCN #20464), at favourable off-axis angles between 0 and 30 deg. The AGILE-GRID detected the burst at about 4-sigma above 30 MeV with an extended gamma-ray emission lasting about 60 sec.

The AGILE MiniCaLorimeter (MCAL), sensitive in the energy range from 400 keV to 100 MeV, detected this burst that triggered the on-board sub-millisecond timescale logic. The MCAL light curve shows multiple peaks, from T0 until the end of the acquisition at T0 + 10.5 s. Three main peaks are evident during the first 2.5 sec following T0. During this time interval, the total number of counts is ~5500 for a background rate of 580 counts/s.

This measurement was obtained with AGILE observing a large portion of the sky in spinning mode.

The short-duration, hard spectrum, bright GRB 140604A has been observed by Konus-Wind, AGILE (MCAL), MESSENGER (GRNS), and INTEGRAL (SPI-ACS), so far, at about 17411 s UT (04:50:11). We have triangulated it to a preliminary, 3 sigma error box whose coordinates are:

The AGILE Gamma Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) observed an intense and prolonged high-energy emission above 100 MeV from GRB 140330A(Fermi-LAT detection: G. Vianello et al., GCN 16048).

Despite a data telemetry gap of about 30 minutes occurring during the prompt emission of this GRB, a maximum likelihood analysis of the AGILE-GRID data integrated from 2014-03-30 04:50 UT (1805 s since trigger time) to 2014-03-31 08:00 UT yields a detection at a significance level larger than 4 sigma, with an average flux of F=(2.30 +/- 0.98) 10-6 ph/cm2/s (E > 100 MeV).

Due to the high fluence of this burst at E>100 MeV, comparable only to the one of GRB 130427A as recorded in the AGILE database, it was possible to derive its properties using the maximum likelihood techniques routinely used in the standard data analysis of AGILE-GRID point sources.

This measurement was obtained with AGILE observing a large portion of the sky in spinning mode.

GRB 131108A (GCN 15464) transited in the field of view of AGILE approximately between t0-20 and t0+150 sec (with t0 = 08:41:55 UT).

A preliminary analysis of the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) data in temporal and spatial coincidence with the GRB shows a significant excess of gamma-ray events above 30 MeV at the location of the event.

During the first 80 seconds after t0 the GRID instrument detected 66 photons compatible with the GRB, most of which below 100 MeV, corresponding to a fluence of 2.56 +- 0.32 1e-5 erg / cm^2 in the energy band 30 MeV - 1 GeV.

The energy distribution of photons in the same energy band is compatible with a power-law of index -2.35 +-0.2 .

An analysis of the AGILE/MCAL data is also in progress. More observations of this interesting burst are strongly encouraged.

"The long hard bright GRB 130606B, observed in gamma-rays by Fermi-LAT (Vianello et al., GCN 14795), Fermi-GBM (Yu et al., GCN 14801) and Konus-Wind (Golenetskii et al., GCN 14803), triggered AGILE-MCAL, sensitive in the range 0.4 - 100 MeV, at 11:55:33 UT (T0).

The light curve above 400 keV shows three main peaks between T0 and T0 + 20 s, followed by two less bright peaks at T0 + 40 s and T0 + 50 s.

The time-integrated spectrum measured between T0 and T0 + 20 s can be fit in the energy range 0.5 - 20 MeV with a simple power law with photon index -2.15 +/- 0.03 and reduced chi-squared 1.67 (46 d.o.f). As observed by MCAL the burst fluence in the same energy range and time interval is (1.62 +/- 0.05)E-04 erg/cm^2. All quoted errors are at 90% confidence levels.

The burst was 118 degrees off-axis with respect to the AGILE GRID pointing direction at T0, from a sky region not accessible to the GRID. This measurement was obtained with AGILE observing a large portion of the sky in spinning mode."

The AGILE Gamma Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) detected emission from GRB 130327B, localised by Fermi/GBM (http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/other/386065447.fermi). The GRB occurred at approximately 28 deg off-axis in the field of view of the AGILE/GRID.

A preliminary analysis of the AGILE/GRID data in temporal coincidence with the GRB shows a significant excess of gamma-ray events above 80 MeV at the location of the event. Most of the events detected by the AGILE/GRID have times between ~ t0 + 9 sec and t0 + 14 sec where t0 is 27 March 2013 at 08:24:04.05 UT.

The GRB was also detected also by the AGILE/MCAL, operating in the energy range 0.5 - 100 MeV.

A more detailed analysis of the AGILE data is in progress. More observations of this interesting burst are strongly encouraged.

Assuming a crab-like energy spectrum, the peak flux on 1-s timescale was 1.50E-06 erg/cm2/s. The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (153.091, 11.182) deg, which is:

RA(J2000) = 10h 12m 21.84s
Dec(J2000) = 11d 10' 55.52"

with an uncertainty of 3' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

The Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) on board AGILE detected the long bright GRB 100724B (Bhat, GCN 10977; Tanaka et al., GCN 10978; Golenetskii et al., GCN 10981, Marisaldi et al., GCN 10994) in the energy range 25 - 500 MeV with a statistical significance larger than 9 sigma.

The gamma-ray emission observed by the AGILE-GRID instrument lasted about 100 seconds, and two peaks are evident in the lightcurve consistent with the behaviour reported by Fermi LAT (the MCAL and GRID preliminary lightcurves are available at http://www.asdc.asi.it/images/GRB100724B_lc.gif ).

The total fluence above 25 MeV during this time interval is F = 0.2+/-0.1 ph/cm2 . A preliminary estimate of the gamma-ray spectral photon index is alpha= 2.2 +/-0.3.

GRB 100724B turns out to be the brightest GRB detected by AGILE above 100 MeV during its operations in space.

"The AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) and Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL) detected at gamma-ray energies the long bright GRB 100724B (Bhat, GCN 10977; Tanaka et al., GCN 10978; Golenetskii et al., GCN 10981).

The GRB triggered AGILE-MCAL, sensitive in the energy range 330 keV - 100 MeV, on 24 July 2010 at 00:42:00 UT (T0). As seen by MCAL the burst has a duration (T90) of ~96 s, with observable emission up to ~T0+150 s. The GRB emission has significant detection in MCAL up to an energy of about 80 MeV.

The time integrated spectrum in the time interval [T0, T0+150.0 s] can be fit in the energy range 500 keV - 80 MeV with a single powerlaw with photon index -2.09 (-0.06, +0.08) (reduced chi2 = 0.94 with 39 d.o.f.). The estimated fluence is (2.7 ± 0.2)x10-4 erg/cm2 in the same energy range. All reported errors are at the 90% confidence level.

AGILE-GRID shows a definite detection above 100 MeV. Further analysis are in progress.

The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec)(302.987, -11.067) deg, which is:

RA(J2000) = 20h 11m 56.95s
Dec(J2000) = -11d 04' 02.04"

with an uncertainty of 6' radius to account for possible systematics error due to the spinning mode.

The GRB is not detected by the AGILE/MCAL (above 350 keV) nor AGILE/GRID (30 MeV - 30 GeV)."

"The long GRB 091010 localized by SuperAGILE (Donnarumma et al., GCN 10004) triggered also the MCAL instrument onboard AGILE, sensitive in the energy range 330 keV - 100 MeV, at 02:43:10 UT (T0). As seen by MCAL the burst has a double-peaked light curve, with a duration of 3.5 s.The time integrated spectrum in the time interval [T0-1.5 s, T0+2.0 s] can be fit in the energy range 400 keV - 2 MeV with a single powerlaw with photon index -3.0 (-0.6, +0.8) (reduced chi2 = 1.09 with 9 d.o.f.). The estimated fluence is (1.40 +/- 0.3)x10-6 erg/cm2 in the same energy range. All reported errors are at the 90% confidence level. No significant emission is detected above 2 MeV.

The photon index and fluence are consistent with those reported by Konus-Wind (Golenetskii et al., GCN 10013), when the different energy range is accounted for.

No significant emission is detected by AGILE GRID. A 3-sigma Upper Limit for emission in the GRID energy range (E>30 MeV) in the same 3.5 seconds time interval used for MCAL analysis can be placed at 0.043 ph/cm2. Using a 60-seconds time interval starting from T0 the 3-sigma Upper Limit is 0.1 ph/cm2."

"SuperAGILE detected a long gamma ray burst on 10 October 2009, at 02:43:09 UT.

The event had a duration of about 10 s in the 17-60 keV energy range, with a highly structured shape. Assuming a Crab-like energy spectrum, the peak flux on 1-s timescale was about 6.2E-07 erg/cm2/s. The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (298.669, -22.538) deg, which is: RA(J2000) = 19h 54m 40.51s Dec(J2000) = -22d 32' 17.36" with an uncertainty of 3' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors. An analysis of the AGILE Gamma Ray Imager (GRID) data is in progress."

The AGILE satellite detected GRB 090618 (P. Schady et al. GCN #9512) at about 36 degrees off axis.
 
Super-AGILE, operating in the 18-60 keV energy range, triggered and localized the burst in the 1-D region of the field of view at a position consistent with the Swift/BAT localization. The emission from this bright GRB with a complex lightcurve was detected at high significance despite the large off-axis direction.

AGILE-MCAL, operating in the 350 keV - 100 MeV energy range, triggered this GRB at 08:28:24.772 UT (T0).  The MCAL overall burst duration is about 100 sec. The burst is composed by three main pulses, the brightest starting at T0+62sec and lasting about 14 seconds.
The total MCAL spectrum between T0 and T0+120 sec can be fit by a simple powerlaw with photon index 3.16 (-0.30, +0.39) (90% c.l.), with reduced chi^2 0.99 (9 d.o.f.), in the 0.5-10 MeV energy range.
The estimated fluence is (3.2 +/- 0.6) 10^{-5} erg cm^-2 in the same energy range.

>From a preliminary analysis of the AGILE-GRID data in the energy range
30 MeV-30 GeV no significant gamma-ray emission above 30 MeV is detected in the GRB error box during both the first and second main pulse for a total duration of about 130 sec. A preliminary upper limit is 0.1 ph cm^-2 over a 130 s duration.

GRB 090618 provides a clear evidence for a class of GRBs bright below a few MeV, showing the lack of significant gamma-ray emission above 30 MeV.

AGILE detected the remarkable short GRB 090510 (Hoversten et al. GCN #9331, Ohno et al. GCN #9334) at approximately 61 degrees off-axis.
An analysis of AGILE-GRID data shows an above 5-sigma detection of gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV. The gamma-ray lightcurve above 100 MeV shows emission during both the prompt phase and during a "delayed" phase.
Also the Mini-Calorimeter detected a very significant and structured event lasting ~200 msec with emission well above 3 MeV.
The burst triggered also SuperAGILE, although outside the field of view.
This is the first short GRB with emission above 100 MeV detected by AGILE.

A more refined analysis of the AGILE-GRID (Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector) data of GRB 090401B (Moretti et al. GCN 9069) confirms the gamma-ray detection of the GRB at energies above 30 MeV with a statistical significance larger than 4 for a 10-second integration after trigger.

Fluence estimate for a 10 second integration is 0.038+/-0.011 ph/cm2 (above 30 MeV). The GRB 090401B gamma-ray spectrum appears to be relatively hard.

An estimate of fluence in the 500 keV - 10 MeV range, as derived from MCAL data, is (1.6 +/- 0.5)e-5 erg/cm2 in the same time interval.

The gamma ray burst 090401B (Schady et al. GCN 9066 & 9067) occurred in the field of view of AGILE, approximately 41 deg off-axis. This 12-s long event was triggered and localized in one dimension by SuperAGILE. It was detected also by the AGILE/ACS and MCAL, with significant detection above 2.8 MeV.

A preliminary analysis of the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) data in temporal and spatial coincidence with the GRB shows a significant excess of gamma-ray events above 30 MeV at the location of the event.

A more detailed analysis of the AGILE-GRID data is in progress. More observations of this interesting burst are strongly encouraged.

"SuperAGILE detected a relatively weak gamma ray burst on July 26th 2008, at 01:26:10 UT. The event was approximately
25 degrees off-axis, with a duration of about 12s in the 20-60 keV energy range, with a single peak structure.
The event was detected during the ground processing, and unambigously localized in one of the two instrument coordinates, while in the other it showed a significance of about 4-sigma.
Based on this localization, the burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (20.398 deg, 13.913 deg), which is:

RA(J2000)  = 01h 21m 35.50s
Dec(J2000) = 13d 54' 46.6"

with an uncertainty of 5' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

Analysis of the AGILE Gamma Ray Imager Detector (GRID) data of the INTEGRAL GRB 080723B (Gotz et al. GCN 8002, Del Monte et al. GCN 8003) does not reveal significant high-energy emission during the time interval of the prompt emission.

A preliminary estimate of the fluence, integrated over 100 s, gives a 99% c.l. upper limit of 0.03 photons/cm^2 for energy greater than 50 MeV.

GRB 080723B has also triggered on-board the AGILE Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL) at 13:22:33 UT (=T0). Using the preliminary in-flight calibration and assuming a Crab-like spectrum we can estimate a fluence of (8 +/- 2)x10^-6 erg/cm^2 in the 350-700 keV energy range in the time interval between T0 and T0+48 s.

The observed duration in the 20-60 keV energy range is about 110 seconds, with a multi-peaked structure. The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (176.823 deg, -60.262 deg), which is:

RA(J2000) = 11h 47m 17.42s

Dec(J2000) = -60d 15' 43.7"

with an uncertainty of 3' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

The same event was also localized and announced by INTEGRAL/ISGRI (BACODINE trigger n. 5311, and Gotz et al., GCN 8002).

The SuperAGILE position lies at 1.1 arcmin from the one reported in the INTEGRAL off-line analysis. A SuperAGILE light curve of the event will shortly be posted on the AGILE Science Data Center website: http://agile.asdc.asi.it .

"The Swift localized GRB 080607 (Mangano et al., GCN 7847; Stamatikos et al., GCN 7852) triggered the Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL) instrument onboard the AGILE satellite at 06:07:23 UT (=T0). The MCAL instrument covers the energy range 350 keV - 10 MeV, without imaging capabilities.

Using the preliminary in-flight calibration and assuming a Crab-like spectrum, we can estimate the fluence in the 350-700 keV energy band to be (23 +/- 7) photons/cm2 corresponding to (1.8 +/- 0.5)x10^-5 erg/cm2, in the time interval T0-T0+14 s. The 1-s peak flux measured at T0+5.1 s is (4.2 +/- 1.2) photons/cm2/s in the same energy band. The GRB was detected also in the 1.4-2.8 MeV energy band with a 10 sigma significance in the 256-ms time window.

We note that the quoted fluence is in agreement within errors with that obtained using the Konus-Wind spectrum reported in Golenetskii et al., GCN 7862. Assuming the spectral model reported in GCN 7862, an agreement in flux within 10% for the energy band 350-700 keV is obtained.

The Swift localization is at about 113 degrees off-axis with respect to the AGILE pointing, so well out of the field of view of the AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID), sensitive in the 50 MeV - 50 GeV energy range. Analysis of the GRID count rate does not show any detection.

This GRB triggered also SuperAGILE and was detected at about 17 sigma significance level in the 18-60 keV band, although it was well outside the field of view, and was detected through the collimator shielding."

SUBJECT: GRB 080514B: Swift-XRT analysis

Following a ToO request, Swift-XRT started observing the field of GRB 080514B at 20:12 on 14th May, about 37 ks after the trigger. Within the SuperAGILE/IPN error box, there are two sources detected, one of which is much brighter and appears to be fading. We therefore believe this to be the X-ray afterglow of the GRB.

Using 925 s of overlapping XRT Photon Counting mode and UVOT data, we find an astrometrically corrected X-ray position (using the XRT-UVOT alignment and matching UVOT field sources to the USNO-B1 catalogue): RA, Dec = 322.84426, 0.70843 which is equivalent to:

RA (J2000): 21 31 22.62
Dec (J2000): +00 42 30.3

with an uncertainty of 1.6 arcsec (radius, 90% confidence). This position is 1.7 arcsec from the i-filter object mentioned by de Ugarte Postigo et al., in GCN Circ. 7719.

A spectrum of the three orbits of Photon Counting (PC) mode data (6 ks of data, spanning 37-49 ks after the trigger) can be modelled with an absorbed power-law of Gamma = 2.06 +0.35/-0.31 and NH = (1.2 +0.8/-0.6)x10^21 cm^-2, which is slightly in excess of the Galactic value of 3.75x10^20 cm^-2. The observed (unabsorbed) 0.3-10 keV flux is 2.34x10^-12 (3.14x10^-12) erg cm^-2 s^-1. This corresponds to an observed counts to flux conversion of 1 count = 3.96x10^-11 erg cm^-2.

The light-curve can be fitted with a single power-law, with a slope of alpha = 1.5 +/- 1.0. If the light-curve continues to follow this decay, the count rate at 48 hours is predicted to be 6.6x10^-3 count s^-1 (an observed flux of 2.6x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1).

This circular is an official product of the Swift-XRT team.

"SuperAGILE and AGILE/MCAL detected a gamma ray burst on May 14th, at 09:55:56 UT. The event was localized by SuperAGILE at approximately 38 degrees off axis, in the one-dimensional portion of its field of view, thus providing a narrow and long error box. The narrow side is 6 arcmin wide, while the long side is approximately 40 degrees wide. In the 20-60 keV energy range the event had a 10s duration, with a multi-peaked structure.

The same event was also detected by Mars Odyssey. The IPN was thus able to reduce the SuperAGILE error box to the 100 sq arcmin error box whose corners are given by the following coordinates (RA, Dec):

322.962 (21h 31m 50.81s) 0.733 (0d 43m 59.69s)

322.774 (21h 31m 5.74s) 0.667 (0d 40m 2.78s)

322.867 (21h 31m 27.99s) 0.806 (0d 48m 21.16s)

322.678 (21h 30m 42.80s) 0.740 (0d 44m 23.63s)

 

The centroid of the error box is at (RA, Dec)= (322.820, 0.737) and the maximal distance between the box corners is 0.283 deg, that is 16.9 arcmin. The event occurred in the field of view of the AGILE GRID. A report on the AGILE/GRID data analysis will follow shortly. We urge follow-up observations at all wavelengths."

The observed duration in the 20-60 keV energy range is about 40 seconds, with a multi-peaked structure.
The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (233.721 deg,
56.424 deg), which is:

RA(J2000) = 15h 34m 53.11s
Dec(J2000) = 56d 25' 27.3"

with an uncertainty of 3' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

This position lies approximately 100 arcsec from the galaxy NGC 5969.

The telemetry of the AGILE Gamma Ray Imager (GRID) is disabled during the passage through the South Atlantic Anomaly, thus no GRID data are available for this GRB."

"SuperAGILE detected and localized a gamma ray burst on April 8th, at 18:12:48 UT. The event was approximately
13 degrees off-axis. The observed duration in the 20-60 keV energy range is about 20 seconds, with a single pulse structure.
The burst was triggered and localized onboard, although distributed after verfication on ground. 
The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (114.678 deg,
33.305 deg), which is:

RA(J2000) = 07h 38m 42.68s
Dec(J2000) = 33d 18' 16.7"

with an uncertainty of 3' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

An analysis of the AGILE Gamma Ray Imager (GRID) data is in progress."

"The Swift localized GRB 080319C (Pagani et al., GCN 7442) triggered the
Mini-Calorimeter (MCAL) instrument onboard the AGILE satellite at 12:25:56 UT (=T0). The MCAL instrument covers the energy range 350 keV - 10 MeV, without imaging capabilities. The MCAL light curve shows two main overlapping broad peaks, the first peaking at T0 and the second peaking at T0+9s in the 350-700 keV energy band. Above 700 keV only the first peak is still detected, with 5 sigma detection also in the 1.4-2.8 MeV energy band. Using the preliminary
in-flight calibration, we can estimate the 1-s peak flux in the 350-700 keV energy band at T0 to be 2.0(-0.8,+0.9) photons/cm2/s. The Swift localization is out of the field of view of the AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID), sensitive in the 50 MeV - 50 GeV energy range.
Analysis of the GRID count rate does not show any detection. The event was well outside of the SuperAGILE field of view as well, but the event passed through the collimator shield and was weakly detected in the count rate." We incidentally note that the brighter GRB 080319B (Racusin et al. GCN 7427) was not observed by the AGILE instruments due to Earth occultation.

The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (199.221 deg, -64.878 deg), which is:

RA(J2000) = 13h 16m 53.13s
Dec(J2000) = -64d 52' 40.8"

with an uncertainty of 3' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

The burst was triggered and localized during on ground data processing, since the onboard localization procedure is not active yet. The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (295.600 deg, 14.645 deg), which is:

RA(J2000) = 19h 42m 23.9s
Dec(J2000) = +14d 38' 42"

with an uncertainty of 8' radius. The given uncertainty accounts for both the statistical and systematic errors.

An analysis of the AGILE Gamma Ray Imager (GRID) data is in progress. The Minicalorimeter also detected the event up to the energy range 0.7-1.4 MeV."

"The SGR-like burst detected on July 27 at about 06:41 UT with Konus/Wind, INTEGRAL-SPI-ACS, RHESSI and Suzaku-WAM (Golenetskii et al. GCN 6684), and likely associated to SGR 1806-20, has been seen also by the Anticoincidence system of AGILE.

This segmented anticoincidence detector surrounds the gamma-ray tracker on five sides (top and 4 lateral). The relative intensity of the count rates measured from the different sides allows to estimate the arrival direction of the detected bursts.

Based on a simple geometrical model, the detection of this event in two of the lateral panels and its non-detection in the top panel, yields an instrumental azimuthal angle within 3 degrees from that of SGR 1806-20.

We thus support the association of this event with SGR 1806-20.

"Further analysis of the AGILE GRID (Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector) data of GRB 070724B (Feroci et al. GCN 6668) confirms the absence of significant emission at energy above 50 MeV. Only one photon consistent with the direction of GRB 070724B has been detected by the GRID in a ~100 second interval around the time of the burst. This is consistent with the measured background rate.

We note that a gamma-ray flux similar to that observed with EGRET from GRB930131 (Sommer et al.1994, ApJ 422, L66), would have given about 20 counts in the GRID in the same time interval.

We also analyzed the data of the AGILE Mini-Calorimeter, which provides a nearly whole-sky monitor in the energy range ~0.35-3 MeV (no directional information), without finding any statistically significant count rate increase in correspondence of GRB 070724B.

"The SuperAGILE experiment onboard the AGILE mission, launched on April 23rd on an equatorial orbit, is currently performing the in-flight check-out and performance verification. The experiment is not yet in its optimal configuration and not all the functions are active. In particular, the onboard triggering and imaging is not active yet and the absolute position reconstruction is being calibrated by using celestial X-ray sources. During this testing phase SuperAGILE detected and imaged GRB 070724b. The event starting time is approximately at 23:25:09 UT on July 24 and it was observed at 21 degrees off-axis. The observed duration in the 20-60 keV energy range is about 55 seconds, with a multi-peak time structure.

The burst position was reconstructed as (RA, Dec) (17.629 deg, 57.673 deg), which is:

RA(J2000) = 01h 10m 31.0s
Dec(J2000) = +57d 40' 23"

with an uncertainty of 20' radius. The given uncertainty is almost entirely systematic and it is due to the very preliminary absolute position calibration, carried out only on 3 X-ray sources. At this preliminary stage the absolute positioning was obtained by the ground calibrations, preliminarily checked with these sources. The error box may be improved over the next hours/days.

An analysis of the AGILE Gamma Ray Imager (GRID) data is in progress. A quick look analysis does not show any bright gamma-ray transient in coincidence with the X-ray emission of GRB 070724b.
